Auditions will consist of cold reading from the script. 

About the Play:

Between the Outlaw and the Rock stands the law.  In the years following the Civil War, Texas

Rangers and local sheriffs stood together to protect the peaceful town of Round Rock from Sam Bass and his gang.  Not an easy task with cowboys swarming the town at the round rock

crossing along the Chisholm Trail and speculators arriving at the new train station. Texas Ranger Major John B. Jones leads the troops in the Sam Bass War, supported by Round Rock Deputy Sheriff A. W. Grimes and thwarted by the Mysterious Hairy Man, identical twins who disagree with

each other on just about everything and Miz Ettie’s crusade to close the saloons and get women the vote.  Add a search for buried treasure and there’s plenty of action and reaction when Sam and his gang show up to rob the Round Rock bank.  How much of this story is true and how much Texas Tall Tale is up to you to decide!

Rehearsal Schedule

Rehearsals for this show will be Tues-Thurs from 6:30PM-9PM at the theatre from 1/11/24 - 2/824

Tech Week (2/12/24 - 2/15/24) Rehearsals will be Mon-Thurs

VERNON COKE WILSON - Texas Ranger noted for his musical talents. Sings, plays guitar, narrates

​

SHERIFF A.W. GRIMES - 20’s. Local lawman; honest, sincere. Hasn’t been tested.

​

HAIRY MAN - Any age. Legendary hermit; no lines; physical comedy and improv opportunities

​

SAM BASS/MAJOR JONES - 25-30. SAM: Charming outlaw; likes to gamble; impulsive; has a dark side. MAJOR JONES: Texas Ranger obsessed with arresting Sam--if he can find him.

​

KATY LOU/PRISCILLA - 18-20. Identical twins. KATY LOU wants to ride and shoot. PRISCILLA is, well, prissy; wants a husband.

 

SEABORN/SPURS/BARBER - Any age. SEABORN: Sam’s sidekick; wisecracker. SPURS: Cowboy rides with Pecos. BARBER: gets involved in the shoot-out.

MURPHY/HAM/GIB - 40-50. MURPHY: One of Sam’s gang; works undercover for Jones; shifty. HAM: Telegraph operator. GIB: Katy Lou and Pris’ father; rancher.

​

PECOS/AKERS - 25-30. PECOS; Cowboy on the Chisholm Trail; Sweet on Katy Lou. AKERS: Yankee land speculator looking for a deal; sweet on Priscilla.

​

MIZ ETTIE KOPPEL - 40s or better. Storekeeper, the town's conscience;advocate for women’s suffrage and temperance.
